Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is coaching?
Myles Downey, Founder of the School of Coaching, defines coaching as ‘facilitating the performance, learning and development of another person’.
Coaching is a goal-oriented, future-focused and action-driven approach.
Coaching is different from:
Mentoring, which relies on the mentor having more experience in a given field than their mentee and advising them.
Training, which implies a sharing of knowledge
Therapy, which often focuses on issues which are psychological in nature
What is my coaching edge?
Empathy, rooted in psychological depth - I am a trained Occupational Psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
I have a relentless, infectious positive energy and passion
When to use a coach?
To support your transition into a bigger or different role
To address a critical development area to build performance
To accelerate your development as a high potential team member
To transition back into business (parental leave, sabbatical, unemployment)
How does coaching work?
Chemistry session: it is a chance for you and me to get to know each other, clarify expectations and see how we both feel about working together in the future. The chemistry meeting is free and it is essential to set realistic expectations.
Triad meeting: 3-way meeting with you, your manager (if the work is commissioned by an organisation) and myself to:
Identify two or three areas to work on,
Agree on confidentiality and on how to report progress.
4-6 1-hour coaching sessions: we embark on an exploratory journey to make progress on your goal. We’d agree on the exact number of sessions together, with a minimum of four to evaluate progress, and some well-defined desired outcomes.
Review session at the end of the coaching assignment: we reflect on progress made and commit to actions to move forward, with your manager (if applicable).
What does a coaching session typically look like?
Check-in: We assess how you are feeling or your state of mind to assess the level of challenge you are up to and agree what would make the session useful for you, in line with the agreed objectives during the triad meeting.
Coaching session: We explore what’s on your mind in a gentle and yet challenging way to enable you to make progress towards your goal. We use a variety of tools and techniques to help you see your challenge under a new light and therefore create new opportunities.
Wrap-up: we conclude by agreeing concrete actions to experiment with or do differently
Where do you work?
We can either meet online or face-to-face in the location of your choice in London.
What happens if I need to cancel a session?
Plans can change and I am willing to accommodate this where possible. If you are unable to make a session I ask that you give as much notice as possible.
If you cancel up to 48 hours before a session, no charge will be made.
If however a scheduled session is cancelled within 48 hours of the scheduled date and time, a 50% cancellation charge of the fee that would have been incurred will be applied. Payment should be made for missed sessions or late cancellations before the next appointment.
